SSC 2150: Tutoring University Students: Theory & Practice

Course Description:

Designated as Writing Intensive and fulfills 3-hour Service Learning credit

Tuesdays & Thursdays in Ellis Library

  • Fall 2009: 11:15 a.m.—12:30 p.m.
  • Spring 2010: 2:00—3:15 p.m.

SSC 2150 provides students with the theoretical and practical frameworks for tutoring at the university. Students will examine the major tenets of tutoring philosophy and pedagogy through readings, discussions, and observations; and explore the practical application of theory to tutoring through study, observation, writing, discussion, role play, and hands-on tutoring in the Learning Center. After an orientation period, students are expected to conduct weekly observations of an experienced tutor and/or participate in supervised tutoring 2 hours per week in addition to class time. Applications from students completing this course will be given first consideration for open Learning Center tutoring positions.

DESCRIPTION on myZou

An introduction to tutoring university students. Provides a pedagogical foundation for tutoring college students in content areas. Topics include but are not limited to diversity, the tutoring relationship, plagiarism, learning strategies, and best practices. Students will observe tutorials during the first part of the course and will conduct their own tutorials later in the semester. Graded on A/F basis only. Prerequisite: Instructor's consent.
